How to Spot Fake Gold Bars: What Real Customers Need to Know

By the team at Himmath Gold  ·  Dubai Gold Bullion Traders Since 2023

Dubai is one of the world's most active gold trading hubs — and that makes it a target. Every week, our team at Himmath Gold . encounters customers who have been sold unpacked bars with no paperwork, or who nearly walked into a deal that was too good to be true. This guide gives you the knowledge to protect yourself.

We trade over 300 kg of gold every single day — from 1 gram investment bars to 100+ kg wholesale consignments exported internationally. That volume means we see everything the market throws at us. Here is what we have learned about spotting fakes, and what you absolutely must check before handing over your money.

The Golden Rule: No Certificate, No Deal

This is the single most important principle we operate by at Himmath Gold — and it should be yours too. If a seller cannot produce a valid certificate for a gold bar, walk away. No exceptions.

A genuine investment-grade gold bar comes sealed in its original assay card or tamper-evident packaging. The moment a bar is removed from that packaging, its provenance cannot be independently confirmed. We see this constantly: customers bring us bars that have been unwrapped by a previous seller, often with the claim that "it's easier to check that way." It is not easier. It is a red flag.

⚑ Himmath Gold Policy

We do not accept or purchase unpacked gold bars without valid certification — regardless of who is selling. This protects our customers and maintains the integrity of every transaction.

The 3 Things Anyone Can Check

You do not need to be a metallurgist to do basic due diligence. Before you commit to any gold bar purchase, check these three things yourself:

1
The Certificate

Every legitimate gold bar comes with an assay certificate issued by the refinery. It should state the weight, purity (e.g. 999.9 fine gold), and match the bar exactly. Do not accept photocopies or certificates presented separately from the bar.

2
The Serial Number

Each bar has a unique serial number stamped directly onto it, which must match the number printed on the certificate and the assay card packaging. A mismatch — or an absent serial number — is an immediate disqualifier.

3
The Brand / Refinery Mark

Legitimate bars are produced by recognised refineries. Check the brand stamp on the bar itself and verify it against the certificate. Known refineries have consistent, precisely engraved markings — vague or blurry stamps are a warning sign.

Trusted Brands We Stock

At Himmath Gold, we carry certified bars from the world's most reputable refineries. Each comes with its original documentation and unbroken packaging. These are the names to know:

PAMP Suisse
Valcambi
Emirates Minting
BTC
Swiss Gold
Al Fardan

If a bar claims to be from one of these refineries but doesn't have matching, verifiable documentation, treat it with extreme scepticism. Counterfeiters specifically target high-trust brands because they command premium prices.

Common Scams We See in Dubai

The Unpacked Bar Problem

One of the most frequent issues we encounter is sellers offering gold bars outside of their original sealed packaging. The explanation is always plausible — "I wanted to show you it's real" or "the packaging got damaged." But an assay card exists precisely to guarantee the bar has not been tampered with. Once broken, that guarantee is void.

No Certificate, Lower Price

Some sellers offer bars at a slightly lower price with the explanation that they "lost the paperwork." This should be an absolute non-starter. A gold bar without a traceable certificate is worth considerably less on the resale market — meaning the discount doesn't compensate you for the risk you're taking. If you ever try to sell that bar to a reputable dealer like us, we cannot accept it.

⚠ Critical Warning

If a deal seems priced too far below the live gold spot rate, there is a reason for it. Legitimate wholesale pricing is competitive but bounded by the market. A dramatic discount almost always signals a problem with the bar's provenance, purity, or authenticity.

"The biggest mistake buyers make is not checking whether the dealer has a physical store and a proper licence. Transparency is everything in this business — if a seller cannot show you where they operate and who regulates them, that itself is the warning sign." — Himmath Gold, Dubai

The Dealer Matters as Much as the Bar

Even if the bar looks right, the seller matters enormously. Before any purchase, ask yourself:

Do they have a licensed, physical premises?

A legitimate gold dealer operates from a real address you can visit. Ghost operations and pop-up sellers are a major source of fraud in the UAE market.

Are they transparent about pricing?

Reputable dealers price against the live international gold spot rate. Ask how they calculate their price and whether they can show you their logic. A good dealer will have nothing to hide.

Can you verify their trading history?

Volume matters. At Himmath Gold, we process 300+ kg daily and export internationally — the kind of operational scale that comes with verifiable records and institutional relationships.

When Doubt Remains: Professional Testing

Even experienced dealers don't always rely solely on visual inspection. When we have any doubt about a bar — even one that looks right on the surface — we refer it to our specialist testing partners. Professional assay testing uses methods like X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning, ultrasound density checks, and fire assay to give definitive results.

This is not a sign of distrust. It is how serious traders protect everyone in the chain — including you, the end customer. If a seller refuses to allow independent testing before a significant purchase, consider that refusal your answer.
